Condoms
The possibilities to protect yourself from HIV have grown in recent years. Nonetheless, the most widely used option is still the condom. Besides protecting against HIV, it also reduces the risk of getting infected with other sexually transmitted diseases.
Treatment-as-Prevention
Medication is another option: If no virus is detected in the blood of HIV-positive people because they are taking a well-functioning drug therapy, the HIV virus can no longer be passed on sexually (“Treatment-as-Prevention”).
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
The newest protective measure is pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). For this method, HIV-negative people take an HIV medication in order to protect themselves against an HIV infection.
